Kids BJJ Classes at Roar MMA

BJJ helps to dece important character traits such as respect, discipline, perseverance, humility, and sportsmanship.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling-orientated combat sport and self-defence martial art based on taking your opponent to the ground, controlling your opponent to gain a dominant position and using various techniques to trap them in a submission.

At Roar MMA, we are mad about BJJ, with adult classes available in Gi, No-Gi and Women’s only. We have over 15 black belts training across two locations. We believe that the fundamental lessons learned in jiu-jitsu have a huge carry-over into life off the mats and can aid in huge personal development for kids and adults alike.

We focus on providing a safe, progressive, and confidence-building environment for kids to enjoy themselves while developing as well-rounded athletes and individuals of strong character. With us, your child will experience pure, high-quality BJJ training that transforms them into the best version of themselves.

Kids BJJ classes are structured to include appropriate warm-ups, technique training, and live rolls and have also been known for some end-of-class “dodgeball”.

Jiu-Jitsu Benefits for Kids

There are so many reasons that BJJ is a great starting point for your kids martial arts journey, here are just a few…

Get Started
  1. Practical Self Defence

BJJ focuses on leverage and technique, making it effective for children to defend themselves against larger opponents. It empowers kids with the confidence and skills to handle real-world self-defence situations.

  2. Character Development

BJJ fosters important character traits such as respect, discipline, perseverance, humility, and sportsmanship. Kids learn the value of hard work, patience, and respect for others, which positively influences their behavior and interactions outside the gym.

  3. Physical Fitness

Regular practice of BJJ improves children's overall physical fitness. It enhances their strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination, promoting a healthy lifestyle and physical wellbeing.

  4. Mental Skills

BJJ requires problem-solving, critical thinking, and strategic planning during grappling exchanges. These mental challenges stimulate cognitive development and enhance children's ability to think creatively and analytically.

  5. Fun and Engaging

BJJ classes for kids are designed to be enjoyable and exciting. Age-appropriate games, drills, and activities keep kids motivated and enthusiastic about learning martial arts.

  6. Confidence Building

As kids master new techniques and achieve milestones in BJJ, they gain a sense of accomplishment, boosting their self-confidence and belief in their abilities.

"The kids classes are set up really well and it's great to be back on the mats myself"

We are honoured to share some feedback from our valued members.

Looked at self defence class for my kids 7 & 14. From the moment I signed up for a free trial, to the next point of contact to make a date for the trial, everything was very smooth and communication was perfect.

Our kids BJJ class is aimed at children aged 7-13, though this is a guideline, not a hard limit. If you are unsure please get in touch with us.

As a trial student, they should just wear comfortable, loose clothing. Even though there is no striking involved, mouthguard’s are recommended for added protection. If you enrol you child, they will need:

  • BJJ Gi
  • BJJ Rash guard
  • Mouthguard
  • Water bottle
  • Gear bag

We usually have Gi’s in stock for sale, come and see us at reception for more info.

In addition to physical fitness, our Kids BJJ Class fosters character development and valuable life skills. Your child will learn discipline, respect, teamwork, problem-solving, and increased self-confidence, which can positively impact various areas of their life.

One technique at a time. As there are many aspects to BJJ, focus on what it is you want to get good at, drill it and apply it to your rolls. When you become consistent in that technique, you get better.

The Gi (also known as a Kimono) is what is traditionally worn in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It is a martial arts suit specially designed to be worn during wrestling, and allows for additional and different techniques to be utilised. In the Gi, we can make use lapels for chokes, and also for alternative grips and control of your opponent.

In No Gi BJJ, we typically wear just a rash guard and shorts. Becoming more and more popular due to the UFC/MMA, No Gi tends to be faster as there is less grip to hold your opponent in position.

Both disciplines are very similar, yet very unique to each other. It is definitely worth trying both, and training in one, the other or both.

Not really, we exploit mechanical leverage, but having strength behind you, can’t hurt.
