Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Classes at Roar MMA
Whatever your situation or background, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu welcomes individuals from all walks of life
A huge concept of BJJ is that a practitioner with skill can easily control a larger, heavier opponent. This is achieved through a series of takedowns, sweeps, reversals, joint locks and chokes. The aspect of building a solid guard foundation, making it difficult for your opponent to “pass your guard”, also makes it an incredible sport for self-defence.
Many people who train in BJJ develop a sense of calm and humbleness towards the sport and their opponents. There is almost no aggression involved. It can increase your confidence, awareness and discipline, making it perfect for both adults and kids.
Other benefits include increased mobility, fat loss, fitness, endurance and strength. Roar MMA employs some of Perth’s most prolific BJJ coaches, training in both Gi and No Gi BJJ.
Increased Confidence
As you progress in BJJ, your skills and knowledge grow, leading to increased self-confidence, self-belief, and a positive self-image that extends beyond the mat.

Get StartedThe Gi (also known as a Kimono) is what is traditionally worn in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It is a martial arts suit specially designed to be worn during wrestling, and allows for additional and different techniques to be utilised. In the Gi, we can make use lapels for chokes, and also for alternative grips and control of your opponent.
In No Gi BJJ, we typically wear just a rash guard and shorts. Becoming more and more popular due to the UFC/MMA, No Gi tends to be faster as there is less grip to hold your opponent in position.
Both disciplines are very similar, yet very unique to each other. It is definitely worth trying both, and training in one, the other or both.
If you are doing Gi, you will need to wear a Gi. If you haven’t got one, there are usually a couple of sets that you may borrow at the gym. If you are doing No-Gi, a sports tee and shorts (no buttons or embellishments) will work just fine. When you’re ready to commit, get a rashguard and MMA shorts or leggings. Try to avoid wearing shorts with pockets.
A mouthguard is highly recommended!
Yes! If you have time in your schedule, consistent weight training supports an increase in strength and prevents injuries. However, if weights aren’t your thing, no problem! Your body will condition itself to jiu jitsu over time with regular training.
On your first class, introduce yourself to the coach. He will introduce you to the class. Let your training partners know you’re new, roll to work on a technique, take it slow and tap early.
This is time commitment dependent. Your training schedule should work for you, but anywhere between 2-5 times is great, including open mats. The main thing is to be sustainable and consistent.
One technique at a time. As there are many aspects to BJJ, focus on what it is you want to get good at, drill it and apply it to your rolls. When you become consistent in that technique, you get better.
Not really, we exploit mechanical leverage, but having strength behind you, can’t hurt.
